Lighter fluid, and the flashback nobody expects

Never use gasoline, kerosene, denatured alcohol, or anything not sold as charcoal starter. Gasoline vapor spreads along the ground and can ignite from a source several feet away, and the injuries from it are in a different category entirely.
If you use starter fluid at all, the safe version looks like this. Apply it to unlit coals only, use roughly the amount the bottle specifies, and give it a minute to soak in. Handling a lit chimney
Set the chimney on the grill's charcoal grate or on bare concrete while it burns. Never on a wooden deck, a plastic table, or dry grass, because the base radiates enough heat to scorch a board through in the 20 minutes it runs.
Pour with a glove on and your face out of the rising heat, and pour deliberately rather than in one motion, because a fast dump throws sparks well past the grill. Where a kettle can stand
Level, stable, hard footing. Grass and gravel both let a leg sink, and a kettle that goes over spills its entire fire.
